Carmelo - As The NBA Turns

I have never been into soap operas.
I spent some summers as a boy with family members who would watch -- even then, I just didn't get it.
What's the appeal?

Occasionally, I get that "soap opera" feel creeping into stories in sports.
The latest is this Carmelo Anthony trade talk.
Frankly, I'm sick of it.

The New York Knicks want him.
He wants the Knicks.
Make it happen already.

Stringing the fans along is not endearing the Knicks, Nuggets, or Carmelo to anyone.

Just the other day, the L.A. Lakers crept into the picture.
Oh, no! The unknown lover has come to woo Melo?

Nope. The straight-up trade between L.A. and Denver (Melo for Bynum) will never happen.
For one, L.A. can't be that lucky (Remember the rediculous trade for Pau Gasol?)
Two, Denver can't be that stupid.
In the long run, the Nuggets organization is better off accepting LESS from the Knicks than MORE from the Lakers for Melo.

Reason: Denver is not likely to become a better team without Melo in the short-term regardless of who they trade him to. So, they would be smart to not strengthen a conference-rival in the process of weakening their own team. Trading Melo to NY gets him out of the conference and does nothing to help a Western Conference powerhouse become more powerful (Lakers).

More recently, Carmelo has indicated he may even be OK staying with the Nuggets and signing a new contract.

What?!
The handsome leading man in the story may not divorce his wife for the attractive (yet fiscally irresponsible) lover?
(I told you this was a soap opera)

Melo's hinting at staying is all a front.
I believe Melo wants out today just as much as he wanted yesterday...and the day before that....and the day before that.
His comment about possibly staying with the Nuggets is Melo's way of making sure a trade happens.
The Knicks NEED Melo after missing out on the big catch this summer (Lebron).
Hearing the Lakers are in the hunt for Carmelo AND hearing Carmelo hint at possibly staying in Denver is sure to light a fire under the Knick's front office and get this deal done.

I hate to spoil the soap opera -- but I will save you a whole lot of daytime t.v. watching by giving you the ending to this story: Carmelo Gets Traded To The New York Knicks Right Before The Trade Deadline.
